Who Truly Comes First in God’s Design: Your Spouse or Your Children? By Sola & Nike Ajayi

In many homes, a quiet tension exists: Should my spouse come first, or should my children? The confusion is understandable, especially in a world that celebrates sacrificial parenting. But faith gives us clarity. God is not the author of confusion, and His Word reveals an order that brings peace, stability, and love to the family.

Scripture teaches that marriage is a covenant before parenting is an assignment. “Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). Before children arrive, God joins a husband and wife into one. That oneness becomes the foundation upon which children are raised. When the marriage is healthy, children feel secure; when it is broken, children often carry the weight.

Putting your spouse first does not mean neglecting your children. It means honoring the relationship God used to bring those children into existence. Children thrive best in an atmosphere where love, unity, and respect between parents are visible. A strong marriage models security, commitment, forgiveness, and godly love, lessons children learn more by watching than by being told.

However, wisdom requires balance. Parenting demands care, protection, and sacrifice. Jesus Himself welcomed children and defended their worth. Yet He never taught parents to replace their marital covenant with their parental role. Spouses are partners for life; children are entrusted to us for a season.

God’s design is simple but profound: marriage first, children next, without competition. When couples love each other well, children are not sidelined; they are blessed. When God’s order is honored, the family flourishes, and peace reigns at home.
