The Love That Refused to Give Up: A Good Friday Reflection on Sacrificial Love

  1. The Love That Refused to Give Up: A Good Friday Reflection on Sacrificial Love

Good Friday is more than a date on the calendar—it is a powerful reminder of a love that refused to give up. A love that endured pain, rejection, and sacrifice, yet chose to stay committed. “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

In marriage today, many relationships struggle because love has been reduced to emotions alone. When feelings fade, commitment weakens. But Good Friday teaches us that true love goes beyond convenience. It stays when it is hard. It forgives when it hurts. It gives even when it receives nothing in return. “Love is patient, love is kind… it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:4–7).

Sacrificial love is not weakness—it is strength under control. It means choosing your partner daily, even in seasons of misunderstanding. It means letting go of pride, extending grace, and working towards unity instead of winning arguments. “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21).

Many homes would be transformed if couples embraced this kind of love. Not a love that keeps score, but one that serves. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).

As you reflect this Good Friday, ask yourself: What kind of love am I giving in my marriage? Is it conditional, or is it committed?

True love does not walk away at the first sign of trouble. It stands, it fights, and it refuses to give up. That is the love that builds lasting marriages.
