WHEN MARRIAGE ENDS BUT PARENTING CONTINUES: LESSONS FROM TONTO DIKEH ON CO-PARENTING WITH PURPOSE BY SOLA & NIKE AJAYI
When a marriage ends, it often feels like everything has fallen apart. Emotions are bruised, trust is broken, and disappointment lingers. Yet, one truth remains unshaken: parenting does not end because marriage ended. Children are not casualties of divorce; they are responsibilities entrusted by God to both parents.
As a faith-based marriage counselor and relationship coach, I strongly believe that co-parenting is not about your past with your ex-partner, but about the future of your child. Scripture reminds us, “Train up a child in the way he should go…” (Proverbs 22:6). Notice, it does not say when life is perfect, but always.
Co-parenting with purpose means choosing maturity over bitterness, peace over pride, and the child’s emotional health over unresolved conflicts. It requires humility to say, “This is no longer about us.” A child thrives best when both parents, regardless of marital status, show unity in love, respect, and guidance.
Forgiveness plays a key role here not necessarily reconciliation, but release. You may not walk together as spouses, but you can still walk together as parents. Children need the presence, affirmation, and covering of both parents to grow balanced and secure.
God is a God of restoration. Sometimes, restoration does not look like remarriage; it looks like healthy co-parenting, peaceful communication, and shared responsibility. When parents rise above their wounds, children rise above statistics.
Marriage may end, but parenting continues. Do it with purpose. Do it with grace. Do it with God at the center because the next generation is watching.
